His Story of Hope
Sermon for the first Sunday of Advent, looking at the theme of hope.
Sermon looking at Jesus’ commandment that we should love one another (John 13:34). How can we, as people of the church, love like Jesus?
Oscillating calls disrupt the coastal calm:
Obstreperous oystercatchers
Clashing over the oyster catch?
They call her a common garden spider
But look closely and you’ll realise
There’s nothing whatsoever common
About her.
Sermon looking at the Lord’s Prayer, and Jesus’ teaching on prayer immediately afterwards. The disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Teach us to pray.’ And we too can come to Jesus today and say, ‘Teach us to pray.’
Diligently
She flies down to the garden,
She selects the ideal twig,
She flies up, twig in beak,
She disappears into the birch tree,
She reappears, and repeats.
They compete for supremacy of the sky,
Two birds together above the trees,
One circling sedately on the breeze,
One haranguing and heckling with hoarse cry.
She welcomed the prophet of God,
She opened her home to him,
She gave him food and a bed for the night,
She built him a guest room on top of the house
For rest and refreshment whenever he passed,
All is well.
Sermon on the practice of Silence and Solitude. How did Jesus practice silence and solitude? How and why should we, as disciples of Jesus, practise silence and solitude?
